BGC highlights human cost of betting shop closures and tax rise with new campaign

By The Weekly Edge desk ·

Summary

The Betting and Gaming Council has launched its “Back Our Betting Shops” campaign to highlight the effects of possible tax rises and closures on workers and communities across Britain. The BGC cited EY modelling that a proposed increase in Machine Games Duty to 40% could put up to 16,000 jobs at risk, threaten nearly 1,500 betting shops and up to 34 casinos, and leave the Treasury about £124 million worse off.

Why it matters

The campaign links the proposed tax rise to possible job losses, venue closures and lower Treasury receipts.
