German court rulings could let players reclaim losses from unlicensed online casinos

By The Weekly Edge desk ·

Summary

A run of German court decisions is strengthening the ability of players to sue operators for losses on online gambling offered without a German licence. Tipico has appealed to the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) after the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court ruled for a player who lost about EUR 10,000 between 2020 and 2022. A final BGH ruling may come in January 2027, and the ECJ ruled in April that EU law does not stop member states attaching civil-law consequences to breaches of gambling bans.
